So you have now seen the amazing views… but in my all excitement, I didn’t think to share what the outside of this big white beast looks like!
When we first started dreaming about DRF, there was some discussion about what to do with the house — admittedly, we fell in love with the farm for the setting — you just can’t beat the rolling hill it sits atop. Some folks suggested tearing down the old house (gasp!!), but in my mind there was never any question about that…this beautiful, forgotten about farmhouse just needed to be brought back to life.
Here she is from the eastside… Yep, those are three side doors. After the renovation is completed, we will just have one. The far left side door goes to an old porch, that was added on and enclosed at some point. We will nix that door and put all new windows in the sunroom. Then, when it is too cold to sit on the porch with our coffee in the mornings, we will sit in the warm, cozy sunroom and look out over the snowy fields.
Here she is from a slightly different vantage point.
That corner door will go bye-bye and we will continue the front porch all the way around the house, wrapping it over until it hits the new mudroom that will be put on.
View from the north…
So all that lovely overgrowth and the cedar tree will come out, as the porch will wrap all the way around the front of the house.
Here she is from the westside. This is where the digger will start in just a few short weeks! We will bump out the kitchen, add on a mudroom, and a full garage with a clean dry basement — which will somehow miraculously attach to the existing nasty ol’ cellar.
On the back of the house is what we call the wood room. If you look at the roof line, you can see the chimney at what was once the back of the house. At some point they picked up and moved an old out-building and attached it to the back of the kitchen, to store firewood and coal. It is pretty primitive now, but it will be super cute after the reno…with it’s open vaulted ceilings and the barn beams that will be used to add a lotta charm.
Super exciting times at the farm! Most of all, I am beyond grateful for who I share it all with…

Sounds like you guys got it figured out . Rome wasn’t built in a day enjoy the journey

Thanks Gibby! We are giving ourselves two years to get it all done, from the start of the new addition, to the end of the renovating! 🙂

In Maine it was once common to take someone else’s barn, house etc and add to your house. Perhaps someone knew this when adding on to your house.

So exciting!!! Are you living in the house during the renovations? I’m just contemplating a kitchen reno and am a little panicked about how we will live here with all of the pets during construction …
ourdrf says
Here’s the really fun tidbit… we are going to live in the old section while the addition is being built the next 3-4 months and then, when the addition is done, we will move into the addition and live in that while we are renovating the original structure! So, basically we will be living in a garage and basement for two years. Oh boy! 🙂

I love the house from all the angles! Good for you to not tear it down. Around here, all the ole Florida homes are being torn down & replaced with McMansions! I think you should wait to cut down the cedar tree until Christmas & decorate with welcoming lights. Either way the cedar wood is sooooo useful!

Thanks Gayle! 🙂 The cedar’s fate will be determined by the excavator!
